THERE ARE NO RULES IN WRITING

there2

I see so many people writing articles about what to do and what not to do when you’re writing.  These may be helpful for a new writer, but it is best to break free of these rules as soon as possible.

The very purpose of writing is to break those rules. Stamp on them. Take a look next time at the “How-To-Blog” post, or “How to write a poem,” and change and twist every word they say.

Defy grammar, defy thought, defy sense. Defy societal norms, defy cultural norms, defy your own norms.

Writing is about expressing yourself, not what someone else thinks you should be saying.

Take the full-stop out of that sentence, move that comma, mix up the spelling of the word that character is saying, destroy the cliches, twist the ending, change the morals, make the good guy the bad guy, write nothing but the word “the” for six pages, put the start at the end, the middle at the start, and the end in the middle, make your character sing every sentence, do whatever you want.

If you want your voice to be heard, you must stick out. To do that, you only have to be yourself.

    • “It was Grandfather’s and when Father gave it to me he said I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire; it’s rather excruciating-ly apt that you will use it to gain the reducto absurdum of all human experience which can fit your individual needs no better than it fitted his or his father’s.”

“To begin the placing there is no wagon. There is no change lighter. It was done. And then the spreading, that was not accomplishing that needed standing and yet the time was not so difficult as they were not all in place.”

“hebephrenic shorthand charging unspeakable mutilations of the spirit, bureaucrats of spectral departments, officials of unconstituted police states, a Lesbian dwarf who has perfected operation Bang-utot, the lung erection that strangles a sleeping enemy, sellers of orgone tanks and relaxing machines, brokers of exquisite dreams and memories tested on the sensitized cells of junk sickness and bartered for raw materials of the will”

Some short examples of some of the genius that comes from denying rules. To succeed as a writer you must send a message. Each sends a message in their own way.
